Late Fees Waived for N.D. Field Inspection Applications

The North Dakota State Seed Department is waiving its policy of charging late fees for field inspection applications submitted after the June 15 deadline, according to Steve Sebesta, deputy seed commissioner.

“We understand the difficulties seed growers are facing due to wet fields,” Sebesta says. “Under these circumstances, we would rather accept a late application than have a grower worry about the added cost of late fees, and we certainly do not want that penalty to influence a grower’s decision to apply for field inspection at all.”

Seed growers still are encouraged to submit applications for their fields as soon as possible. Growers should apply for inspection even if a field is questionable.

“It is better to have the field in the system and cancel the inspection at a later date than to delay the application process,” Sebesta says. “Late applications can create logistical problems for field staff that ultimately can delay the field inspection and a timely harvest.”

Applications for field inspection can be obtained from the North Dakota State Seed Department, your local county Extension Service office or on the Web at www.ndseed.com.

This waiver applies to field seeds only. Late applications for potato fields will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For more information, potato growers should call Steve Marquardt, potato program director, at (701) 231-5400.
