June 30, 2005 Crop Highlights of the Carrington Research Extension Center Field Day The North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center annual field day will be held Tuesday, July 19. Several crop sessions, such as a crop variety and production review, crop pest management and a grain drying demonstration, will be included on the day’s agenda. The morning agronomy tour will begin at 9:30. The tour will focus on a review of crop variety and production trials. The crops to be discussed include spring wheat, barley, durum, dry beans, corn and sunflowers. In addition, the tour will include a grain drying demonstration by Vern Hoffman and Ken Hellevang, NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department. Following a noon lunch, tour participants will be able to attend one of two crop sessions beginning at 1 p.m. During the first concurrent session, updates will be provided on weed and disease management. During the weed session, discussion will focus on volunteer crop control and weed management in alternative crops. The disease management session will focus on soybean rust, sclerotinia in a variety of crops and cereal disease management. In addition, a short presentation on West Nile virus is planned. Time will be available to ask speakers specific questions on weed and disease management in any crop. The second crop session is on soil and crop management. Crop and soil specialists will discuss crop planting dates, early- and late-season nitrogen management in wheat, new products for possibly enhancing wheat and soybean production, tillage systems with emphasis on strip-till, and soil quality.
