Dickinson Research Extension Center Field Day Is July 13

The annual North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center Field Day will be held Wednesday, July 13.

The traditional small grains variety tour begins at 8:30 a.m. on the grounds of the DREC. Following lunch, the afternoon management tour will begin at 1 p.m. with loading of the buses.

The focus of this year’s management tour is on forage in rotations. Martin Entz, University of Manitoba cropping systems professor, will discuss the benefits and challenges of inserting forage crops into rotations. Entz’s research during the past 16 years has focused on the role of crop and plant diversity in sustainable agriculture.

Entz and Dwain Meyer, NDSU Extension Service forage management specialist, will do a presentation on “sure shot” methods of terminating alfalfa stands in western North Dakota and improving the success rate in establishing alfalfa stands in crop rotations.

Meyer also will lead a discussion on implementing sound alfalfa management practices, alfalfa staging and alfalfa weevil control. Producers will have an opportunity to try their hand at determining alfalfa stand maturity.

Patrick Carr, DREC agronomist, will highlight annual forage varieties and management.

Bridget Johnson and Ron Wiederholt, DREC and Carrington REC nutrient waste management specialists, will do an on-farm demonstration designed to give producers an opportunity to learn how to use manure as a fertilizer and soil amendment.

In addition, the DREC will host its annual horticulture tour starting at 3 p.m. Ron Smith, NDSU Extension Service horticulturist, will host the tour.

Activities conclude with a community barbecue at 5 p.m. on the DREC grounds. The DREC and the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee sponsor the supper. To reserve a spot on the bus, contact Lisa Vance or Phyllis Okland at (701) 483-2348. More information about the tours is also available on the DREC Web site at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/dickinso.
