Livestock Research and Review Highlighted at Carrington Research Extension Center Field Day

The North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center’s annual beef production Field Day will be held Tuesday, July 19, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Developments in beef production and research will be highlighted during the morning. Topics include:

  • Feeding immature high-moisture corn by Vern Anderson, animal scientist at the Center. Research during the winter indicated that last year’s high-moisture corn had more value in feedlot rations than previously thought. Anderson also will review research on using soybean hulls for newly weaned calves and will discuss when and how to process field peas.
  • Results of a corn mold survey by Karl Hoppe, livestock specialist at the Center. Hoppe also will review the cattle feedout project.
  • Wendy Bengochea, Foster County Extension Service agent and animal systems specialist, will discuss barley processing in backgrounding diets.
  • Bedding material for cattle by Bridget Johnson, NDSU Dickinson REC livestock nutrient management specialist.
  • Biosecurity issues for producers will be addressed by Sara Wagner, assistant professor in the NDSU Animal and Range Sciences Department
  • Cow-calf profits and contributing management factors will be highlighted by Steve Metzger, Carrington Area Farm Business Management Program director.
  • Steve Zwinger, Carrington REC agronomy research specialist, will show field scale annual forage production for haying and fall grazing.

“The annual beef production Field Day is an excellent opportunity for producers to discuss current beef cattle issues and management concerns with researchers and Extension Service staff in a group setting or one-on-one,” Anderson says.

For more information, contact the Carrington REC at (701) 652-2951 or check its Web site at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/carringt/. The Carrington REC is located 3.5 miles north of Carrington on U.S. Highway 281. In addition to the livestock tour, crop management tours and other events also will be featured. A sponsored noon lunch will be served.
