July 28, 2005 NDSU Student Engineering Branch Wins National Honor North Dakota State University’s Student Engineering Branch of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers was second runner-up in the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ 68th annual student engineering and mechanization awards competition. The awards go to the student branches that compile the most outstanding record of activities and achievements in the past year. Those accomplishments include membership, committees, meetings, attendance, programs, special member activities, inspection trips and publications. Students who prepared the NDSU branch’s activities and achievements report for this competition were Justin Balsdon, a sophomore from Langdon, N.D.; Jacob Braukmann, a junior from New York Mills, Minn.; Danny Middlestead, a junior from Edgeley, N.D.; Peter Polansky, a junior from Gatzke, Minn.; and Scott Torgerson, a senior from Buchanan, N.D. The NDSU branch won in the category for branches at schools with fewer than 33 national members. The branch has about 25, according to adviser Tom Bon. The Student Engineering Branch is affiliated with NDSU’s Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department. The branch provides students interested in that field with the opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills and attend local, regional and international professional meetings. “Placing in the competition continues a long history of the NDSU branch earning recognition in this national competition,” says Leslie Backer, chair of the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers created the awards program in 1935 to improve the student branches through competition and provide a permanent record that can be used to assess each branch’s development through the years. ### Source:
