NDSU Crop Biotechnology Conference
Set for Sept. 21-22

A Crop Biotechnology Update Conference will be held Sept. 21-22 in Fargo. The conference will be at the Doublewood Inn.

The first session on Sept. 21 begins at 1 p.m. and features a presentation on trends in the use of crops developed through biotechnology in the U.S. and worldwide by Duane Berglund, North Dakota State University Extension Service agronomist.

NDSU Vice President for Agriculture and University Extension, D.C. Coston, will give participants an overview of biotechnology research and other activities at NDSU. Coston will be followed by Bill Wilson, NDSU agricultural economist, who will discuss the economics of biotech crops in cropping systems.

At 3:30, seed and/or chemical industry representatives will discuss what’s in the commercial biotechnology pipeline.

Sherman Reese, National Association of Wheat Growers president, will discuss his group’s initiative in biotech wheat at 4:30. Al Skogen, Growers for Biotechnology chairman and a North Dakota farmer, then will give a producer’s perspective on biotech wheat.

The evening’s keynote speaker at the 6:30 dinner is Chuck Lambert, USDA undersecretary of Agriculture for the USDA’s regulatory programs. Lambert’s topic is the regulation of agricultural biotechnology in the U.S.

The second day, Sept. 22, begins at 8:30 a.m. with a session on present and future biotechnology challenges. Presenters are Brad Brummond, Walsh County Extension agent; Joel Ranson, NDSU Extension agronomist, and George Flaskerud, NDSU agricultural economist and grain marketing specialist.

At 10 a.m., Gary Beil, Minnesota Crop Improvement Association president and CEO, will do a presentation on identity-preserved issues and traceability in the marketplace. Beil will be followed by Phil McClean, NDSU agronomist and professor, who will discuss global advances in biotechnology.

The conference will end at 11:45. with discussion and comments followed by a noon lunch. The conference is free, but registration is required before Sept. 15.
