Northwestern North Dakota Walking Program Goes Statewide

A North Dakota State University Extension Service-sponsored walking motivation program that started in northwestern North Dakota is going statewide this month.

It also has changed its name to Walk North Dakota.

Walk North Dakota is open to anyone who wants to get more physically active. Participants don’t even have to live in North Dakota. They can join as groups or individuals. All they need to do is pay the $10-per-person registration fee and report the number of steps they’ve walked every two weeks.

This program will challenge participants to walk approximately 200 miles during the eight-week program. The program runs Sept. 11 through Nov. 5.

To reach the goal, participants can take 10,000 steps five days a week. That is walking an equivalent of five miles a day or 25 miles a week. On average, people walk 2,000 to 4,000 steps a day.

Participants will receive incentive prizes when they sign up and at the end of the eight weeks. If they complete the program and report their steps as required, their name will go into a drawing for a $100 grand prize.

Linda Hauge, an Extension agent in Williams County, helped start the program about a year ago as part of a NEND 5 + 5 Coalition Walk educational program. Then known as Walk Northwest North Dakota, the program covered five counties in northwestern North Dakota and the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, as well as some counties in northeastern Montana. A total of more than 800 walkers participated in four eight-week sessions.
