Dairy Beef Conference Set for Nov. 2-3

The Managing and Marketing Quality Holstein Steers Conference will be Nov. 2-3 at the Kahler Grand Hotel in Rochester, Minn.

The 1 1/2-day program is for producers, consultants, nutritionists, buyers, university Extension Service educators and anyone else involved in the dairy beef industry.

This meeting will focus on academic research related to dairy beef production and nationwide expertise from industry professionals and producers, according to J.W. Schroeder, Extension Service dairy cattle specialist at North Dakota State University. Extension specialists and industry representatives from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota have been working together for several months to offer this program.

“Interest in U.S. dairy expansion and recent favorable prices have increased the opportunity for farm feedlots to raise dairy beef, and a regional symposium on this topic has not been offered since 1991,” Schroeder says. “This conference is long overdue. A lot of new information has been assimilated since then.”

Conference topics will include:

* An overview of nutrient requirements for dairy beef steers
* Amino acid nutrition for the young dairy calf
* Forage-to-concentrate ratios
* Ethanol coproduct utilization
* Recommended implant strategies
* Responses to ractopamine
* Meat quality from dairy steers
* Market aspects related to Holstein steers
* Housing considerations
* Grazing Holstein steers
* Calf health
* Impact of colostrum and milk replacer on immunity

An exhibition area will allow participants to interact with industry representatives.
