September 29, 2005 Athletes to be Awarded Scholarships During Harvest Bowl Four scholarships will be awarded to outstanding North Dakota State University female and male athletes during this year’s Harvest Bowl festivities Nov. 4-5. The NDSU Harvest Bowl program also recognizes the outstanding work of agriculturists in 53 counties in North Dakota and five counties in Minnesota. A special agri-business award goes to an individual who has a distinguished record in agriculture and business. This year’s recipient of the award is Jack Carter. The 2005 Harvest Bowl scholarship recipient is Lindsay Shockman-Rogers. The recipient of a Harvest Bowl scholarship in memory of Robert Johansen is Justin Frick. The Bob and Darlene Yaggie Scholarship is awarded to Derek Arndt and the Bob Lauf Memorial Scholarship goes to Isaac LaVant. Shockman-Rogers is a 6-foot-1-inch junior middle hitter for the North Dakota State women’s volleyball team. She moved into a starting role last year for a young Bison squad, and became the team’s top blocking threat at the net. She totaled a team high 124 blocks and averaged 1.06 blocks per game while making 31 of 33 starts and playing in 117 of NDSU’s 118 games. She also is a strong offensive player and developed into an attacking threat from all three hitting positions. She averaged 2.44 kills per game and was second on the team with 286 kills last season. Shockman-Rogers was selected to the Division I all-independent team and the Division I independent all-academic team. She is a 2003 graduate of LaMoure High School, where she was a two-time all-state pick. She was District 5 player of the year that season, a Miss Volleyball award candidate and a three-time all-region performer. She is the daughter of Bruce and Ann Shockman of LaMoure and is studying pre-dentistry. Frick, a 6-foot-3-inch junior defensive tackle from Yankton, S.D., is a valuable member of the Bison football team’s defensive line rotation. Frick gained experience from action in all 11 games last season. With his increasing skills in technique and footwork, he turned in an outstanding performance against nationally ranked Northwestern State of Louisiana. While playing for Yankton High School, Frick was first-team all-state, a member of the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader's Elite 45 and two-time all-conference. He also competed in wrestling, track and field, and baseball. He was third in the state as a junior in wrestling, third in the state in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Majoring in university studies, Frick is the son of Terry and Mary Frick. Arndt, a 6-foot-4-inch senior football tight end, hails from LaMoure. Arndt is a strong, young talent and is making the transition from defense to offense successfully. He played his first year as a true freshman for the Bison. Arndt had his redshirt taken off during the 2002 season and played in five games at outside linebacker, recording one tackle in the loss at Nebraska-Omaha. Arndt prepped at LaMoure High School, where he was a two-time first-team all-conference selection, second-team all-state as a junior, and first-team all-state as a senior. Arndt was also named Region Player of the Year, team most valuable player and captain for his senior year. That same year, Arndt caught 24 passes for 479 yards and made 10 touchdowns as a tight end, and he charted 100 tackles as a defensive lineman. He also competed in basketball, where he was a four-year all-conference player and all-state as a senior. Derek is the son of Lynn and Marianne Arndt and is majoring in criminal justice. LaVant is a senior defensive end who transferred to North Dakota State in 2004 from Phoenix. LaVant saw a great deal of action on the defensive line playing in all 11 games in his first year as a Bison. He is an intelligent player on and off the field who utilizes his quickness against opponents. He graduated from Phoenix Christian High School. During that time, he was a four-year starter on the offensive and defensive line, an all-state, all-region and all-conference first- team performer as a junior and senior, and played in the Arizona All-Star game. He was a four-year letter winner in wrestling and track and field, and a runner-up at the Arizona Class 5A state wrestling tournament as a junior and senior. Majoring in zoology, he was selected to participate in the McNair Scholars program, which is named after Ronald E. McNair who was a member of the Challenger space shuttle crew. The NDSU program is one of the original 14 programs in the nation (funded by the U.S. Department of Education). LaVant is the son of Bernard and Letitia LaVant.
