October 6, 2005 New NDSU Bulletins Available to Help Livestock Producers Livestock producers with existing feeding areas or those looking to upgrade their facilities have many questions regarding current regulations and what steps to follow when enhancing their livestock feeding areas. Two new bulletins from the North Dakota State University Extension Service will help these producers. “Assessment Tools for New or Existing Animal Feeding Operations (NM-1284)” is designed to help livestock producers evaluate their livestock facilities’ possible impacts on surface water. “This bulletin is a good tool that producers can use themselves or with an adviser to help them determine if their livestock facility needs a permit from the North Dakota Department of Health,” says Ron Wiederholt, NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center nutrient management specialist. The bulletin is in a worksheet format that allows producers to score their facilities’ potential water quality impacts. The facility score will help the producer determine if they have a high, medium or low potential to impact surface water and if they need to investigate getting a permit for their operation. “Producers Guide to Livestock Manure Management Systems (NM-1297)” was developed to inform producers about the process involved in developing a livestock manure management system. “The bulletin outlines site assessment, cost-share/incentive programs, producer match and nutrient management planning,” Wiederholt says. “Probably the most helpful part of this bulletin is the sample course of action, which gives a step-by-step explanation of what a producer needs to do when upgrading an animal feeding facility.” These bulletins are available through your local Extension Service county office or on the Web at www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/watanim.htm. ### Source:
