Racial Diversity in North Dakota Rising

While racial minorities in North Dakota continue to represent a relatively small proportion of the state’s total population (less than one in 10), their numbers are rising.

This month’s “Population Bulletin,” a monthly publication from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University, presents the July 1, 2004, population estimates by race as released from the U.S. Census Bureau’s population estimates branch.

These estimates reveal a continuing increase in population diversity throughout North Dakota. The state’s minority population (people reporting their race as only black, only American Indian or only Asian) totaled 42,010 in 2004, which is 6.6 percent of the state’s total population of 634,366.

While the minority population in North Dakota grew 6.3 percent between 2000 and 2004, the white population (which comprises the vast majority of all persons in the state) declined by 10,382 people (1.7 percent).

“Much of the increase in racial diversity is occurring in the state’s largest population centers, especially among blacks and Asians,” says Richard Rathge, State Data Center director. “In contrast, increases among the Native American and Hispanic populations within the state are more spread out.”

The American Indian population, North Dakota’s largest minority (representing 5.2 percent of the state’s total population), grew by 1,592 (5.1 percent) between 2000 and 2004. During the same time, the black population grew by 426 (10.2 percent) and the Asian population grew by 483 (12.3 percent).

The Hispanic population (an ethnic category reported separately from race), representing 1.5 percent of the state’s total population, grew by 1,969 (25.3 percent) between 2000 and 2004 in North Dakota. Nationally, the Hispanic population grew by 17 percent.
