October 13, 2005 NDSU Extension Service Offers New Beef Cattle Publications The North Dakota State University Extension Service has three new publications for beef cattle producers. They are:
“Field Pea Grain for Beef Cattle” discusses the benefits of including field peas in beef cattle feed rations. Vern Anderson, animal scientist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center, and Greg Lardy, Extension beef cattle specialist in the NDSU Animal and Range Sciences Department, co-authored the publication. “This publication gives recommendations on using peas in several beef cattle diets, including creep feeds, feedlot and cow wintering,” Anderson says. “This new feed grain gets high marks by virtually all producers who have fed it.” “Phosphorus Supplementation and Requirements for Beef Cattle” covers the importance of phosphorus to beef cattle, how producers can spot phosphorus deficiency and what they need to consider when providing their cattle with a phosphorus supplement. “Beef Cattle Mineral Nutrition” focuses on the important role of minerals in beef cattle’s health, growth and reproduction. Lardy and former graduate student Marcy Ward co-authored these publications. “Beef cattle mineral nutrition is an important area for many beef cattle producers,” Lardy says. “These publications detail a number of factors related to proper mineral nutrition and give recommendations on improving mineral nutrition.” These publications are available from your local Extension Service office or the Agriculture Communication Distribution Center at (701) 231-7882 or acarvell@ndsuext.nodak.edu. They also are on the Web at www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/beef.htm. ### Source:
