Majority of North Dakota Children Have Health Insurance

The majority of North Dakota children ages 0 to 17 were covered by some form of health insurance in 2004, according to a recent survey.

“North Dakota is working very hard to provide children access to medical coverage, and we are succeeding, especially with the help of the Covering Kids and Families initiative,” says Richard Rathge, North Dakota State Data Center director.

Covering Kids and Families is a national initiative that connects uninsured families to low-cost or free health coverage programs. This effort has been made available by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and spearheaded in North Dakota by the Dakota Medical Foundation.

“The state’s outreach efforts have connected 1,747 children to health coverage since the initiative started in January 2003,” Rathge says. “This is something we should be proud of and continue to improve upon.”

This month’s “Economic Briefs,” a monthly publication from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University, focuses on those children ages 0 to 17 without health insurance in North Dakota. The current population survey (CPS), a joint project by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Bureau of the Census, provides annual estimates on the number of people with or without health insurance by selected characteristics.

Results from the 2005 Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the CPS (providing 2004 data) indicate that, while the majority of children in North Dakota are covered, 7 percent to 12.2 percent of the state’s children have no form of health insurance. This translates to between 10,710 and 17,290 children without health insurance in North Dakota.

Nationally, 10.9 percent to 11.5 percent of children were without health insurance coverage in 2004.
