October 27, 2005 Milk Producers, Pork Council Slate Joint Convention For the first time, two North Dakota livestock groups are holding a joint annual convention. The North Dakota Milk Producers Association and North Dakota Pork Council have scheduled a convention for Dec. 8-9 at the Doublewood Inn in Bismarck. “All livestock producers share similar goals when it comes to production efficiency and environmental protection,” says J.W. Schroeder, North Dakota State University Extension Service dairy specialist and member of the conference’s organizing committee. “This collaboration is an announcement by the dairy and pork producers of North Dakota that the futures of our communities and our businesses require collaboration and communication.” John Phipps, the new host of the nationally syndicated “U.S. Farm Report,” will be a principal speaker. Farm Journal Media recently named Phipps as host and managing editor of the popular, long-running farm program. He succeeds Orion Samuelson and Max Armstrong. A sixth-generation farmer from Illinois, Phipps operates a 1,400-acre farm, writes articles and columns for the Farm Journal and Top Producer magazines, and contributes to the “AgDay” and “WeekEnd MarketPlace” TV programs. Main speakers for the convention include North Dakota native Phyllis Johnson, who heads the nation’s leading agricultural research laboratory at Beltsville, Md., and David Schmidt, a University of Minnesota biosystems engineer. Johnson will tell how science affects public policy. Schmidt will discuss aerial pollutant emissions. The joint convention also will include breakout sessions on specialty topics, such as:
A trade show of interest to dairy and pork producers also will be featured both days of the convention. “Dairy producers and pork producers have many common concerns, so these two organizations are pooling their resources to put together an excellent program,” says North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson. “It will be a great opportunity for members of both groups to network and learn from each other.” In addition to Schroeder, the conference’s organizing committee includes Charlotte Meier, the pork council’s executive director, and Bobbi Talmadge, North Dakota Department of Agriculture livestock development specialist. The deadline to register for the conference is Dec. 2. For more information or registration forms, call Schroeder at (701) 231-7663, Meier at (701) 563-4513 or Talmadge at (701) 328-4159. Forms also will be available soon on the Web at www.agdepartment.com/. Conference planners say that to more accurately plan for the size of the event, they encourage anyone planning to attend to pre-register by sending their registration to the address on the form. ### Source:
