NDSU to Hold Beef Quality Assurance Training

The North Dakota State University Extension Service has scheduled a series of training sessions for beef producers who want to be certified or recertified in the state’s beef quality assurance program.

Producers need to renew the certification every three years. They can be recertified by attending one of the training meetings, going through the certification program online at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/bqa or completing a paper version of the program.

“In the past, producers have overwhelmingly chosen to recertify by attending another meeting,” says Lisa Pederson, Extension Service beef quality assurance specialist.

New this year, the first hour to 1 1/2 hours of each training meeting will be dedicated to providing producers the knowledge they need to be recertified and for initial certification. That means producers who are there to become recertified need to stay only for that portion of the meeting. However, they are welcome to remain for the entire session, Pederson says. Producers who let their certification lapse must attend the full session to be recertified.

The cost to become certified or recertified is $15. The fee covers the three-year certification period. Recertification must be completed by Dec. 31.

Topics that will be covered in the training sessions include a brief overview of the national beef quality audits, national animal ID program, source and age verification, biosecurity and animal health product use.
