November 3, 2005 Crops Day Scheduled for Dec. 13 in Carrington Looking ahead to the 2006 crop season, farmers likely will expand grain legume and oilseed acres. In response to the need for updated production and economic information on sunflowers, field peas, soybeans, canola and flax, the North Dakota State University Extension Service will conduct a Dec. 13 meeting at the Carrington Research Extension Center, according to Greg Endres, Extension area agronomist and Tim Becker, Eddy County Extension agent. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $10 per person, which covers a noon meal and other event expenses. The National Sunflower Association, North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Association and the North Dakota Soybean Council will provide refreshments. The morning’s educational program, starting at 8:30, will focus on sunflowers, field peas and economics. Sunflower topics to be discussed include minimizing the impact of blackbirds and disease management (downy mildew and sclerotinia). Variety selection, weed and disease management and marketing options are topics for field pea growers. The morning session will close with an economics presentation, which will compare costs and income for oilseeds and field peas with small grains and corn. Soybeans, canola and flax are the topics for the afternoon sessions beginning at 12:45. Soybean topics include crop rotation (continuous soybeans vs. soybeans following a grass crop), disease management and plant nutrition (seed inoculation and response to fertilizer application). Canola topics include nitrogen management and straight harvest. The flax session will include plant establishment recommendations and harvest management. Speakers include NDSU agronomists Greg Endres, Bob Henson, Kent McKay, John Lukach and Blaine Schatz; Carl Bradley, Extension plant pathologist; and Richard Maine, Wells County Extension agent. Guest speakers are Tom Gulya, USDA/ARS sunflower pathologist; George Lenz, USDA/APHIS blackbird-sunflower studies director; Steve Metzger, Farm Business Management Program area coordinator; and Larry White, North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Association marketing specialist. A total of 6 certified crop adviser continuing education credits (2 in crop management, 3 in pest management and 1 in nutrient management) will be requested for this event.
