NDSU Equine Program Hosts Horse Judging Workshop

Retired equine educator and coach Jon Wolf of Galva, Ill., will hold a horse judging workshop at North Dakota State University on Dec. 10-11.

Topics he will cover Dec. 10 include coaching a horse judging team, building the team, judging criteria, 10 secrets to success and setting up a judging book. Subjects for the Dec. 11 sessions include how to gain the respect of horse exhibitors and show management, horse show judges’ responsibilities, factors involved in making a decision, judging mechanics, scoring systems, and halter and performance criteria.

Each day’s program starts at 8 a.m. with registration and refreshments. The sessions end at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 4 p.m. on Dec. 11.

The cost is $25 to attend one of the daylong programs or $40 for both. The workshop, to be held on the NDSU campus, will include a visit to the NDSU Equine Center. Event organizers recommend participants dress in layers.

Wolf received his bachelor of science and master’s degrees in animal science from the University of Illinois. He developed the horse science curriculum at Black Hawk College, Kewanee, Ill., in 1974. He recently retired after spending 31 years at the college, where he taught a variety of equine classes and coached many successful youth and collegiate horse judging teams, including 10 American Quarter Horse Association world champions.

He also judged the 2004 North Dakota State Fair 4-H horse show, provided his judging expertise at the state 4-H horse judging contest and conducted a horse judging workshop at NDSU in January. More than 40 people attended the workshop.
