December 22, 2005 NDSU Offers Workshop to Maximize Pivot Irrigation Dollars One of the biggest question marks in irrigation is how to achieve consistency in crop yields and quality. To address some these questions, an irrigation workshop has been developed. It emphasizes water management techniques for specific crops. The workshop will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the North Dakota State University Williston Research Extension Center (Ernie French Center) starting at 8:30 a.m. (CST). There will be a small registration fee to assist with expenses. Discussion on timothy and pulse crop production, along with water quality and controlling salinity under irrigation, will highlight the morning session. The workshop will start with Les Bohrson, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food, discussing timothy and pulse crop production and varieties. Jim Staricka, Williston REC soil scientist, will update the participants on fertilizer strategies during this time of high input costs. To wrap up the morning session, Dave Hopkins, NDSU soil scientist, will discuss water quality and controlling salinity issues. During lunch, there will be updates from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Bank of North Dakota on programs available to assist in purchasing irrigation equipment. To start the afternoon session, Dwain Meyer, NDSU Extension Service forage specialist, will discuss alfalfa management for high-quality production. Bob Evans, Agriculture Research Service-Sidney, Mont., will do a presentation on nozzle sizing and variable frequency motors. Jed Waddell, ARS – Sidney, will end the workshop discussing fertility practices for malt barley. The noon lunch is sponsored by the Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative. First International Bank and Trust of Williston also is a sponsor of the workshop. For more information, call Chet Hill at (701) 774-4315. ### Source:
