January 12, 2006 Ranchers in Oklahoma and Texas Need Hay North Dakota producers with extra hay may want to consider selling or donating it to ranchers in the drought-stricken areas of Oklahoma or Texas, according to Kevin Sedivec, North Dakota State University Extension Service rangeland specialist. “The alfalfa and hay crops were very good across the state last year, so producers may want to consider donating or selling some of that crop,” Sedivec says. “During our drought years, some southern producers donated or sold some of their hay crop to North Dakota producers.” The Oklahoma and Texas Department of Agriculture have set up toll-free hotlines for producers to call. For Texas, the number is (877) 429-1998 or go to www.agr.state.tx.us. In Oklahoma, the number is (800) 580-6543. “Because of the drought, most producers had a poor crop and drought conditions are continuing in the affected areas,” Sedivec says. “Large sections of Texas and Oklahoma received half or less of their annual rainfall last year. Many calves are going to feedlots at lighter than normal weights.” ### Source: Kevin
