North Dakota Crop Budget Worksheets are Online

The North Dakota State University Extension Service’s 2006 projected crop budgets are available as electronic worksheets on the Web at www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/ecguides.htm.

“The numbers used in the budgets are generalizations for large, multicounty regions and therefore should be adjusted for an individual farm,” says Andy Swenson, NDSU Extension Service farm management specialist. “Also, market prices can change quickly and are often the deciding factor in crop selection.”

These simple worksheets should be helpful for those who wish to adjust their budgets to reflect cost and yield expectations, and to evaluate different price scenarios. However, the computer user must have MS-Excel to operate the worksheets.

In addition to showing individual crop profitability, the worksheet for each region includes a whole-farm cash flow summary section to evaluate the one-year financial feasibility of a North Dakota crop farm. It requires entering crop acres, expected decoupled government payments, and loan payments on machinery and land. It displays the amount of cash available for family living and taxes.

“It appears that areas of the state that are well-suited for soybean production have the best chance of cash flowing in 2006,” Swenson says. “It also appears that farms in the northern and western regions may have a difficult year. Statewide, producers will have more dollars invested in the 2006 crop because of higher costs and therefore will be at greater financial risk from a revenue shortfall due to poor weather and/or lower crop prices.”
