NDSU Receives Grant for Colorectal Cancer Program The Dakota Medical Foundation has awarded North Dakota State University a $5,390 grant toward a colorectal cancer prevention and screening program. The NDSU Department
of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, Extension Service and Department
of Nursing will team up to develop and present educational materials on
colorectal cancer prevention and screening at worksites in 10 eastern
North Dakota counties during 2006. The project has two major goals. One is to improve people’s lifestyle behaviors to help prevent them from developing colorectal cancer. The other is to increase the number of people who receive the recommended screening tests that allow for early detection and treatment of the disease. “Colorectal cancer is 90 percent preventable and more than 90 percent treatable if detected early,” Edwards says. NDSU Extension agents will present the educational materials on colorectal cancer prevention to audiences at worksites as part of companies’ wellness initiatives. Businesses are increasingly interested in providing educational materials to their employees to help prevent chronic disease, and thus reduce health-care costs, Edwards says. Edwards, who is in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, will be working with Beverly Greenwald, an assistant professor in the Department of Nursing, on this project. Edwards says the grant will help expand on Greenwald’s previous colorectal cancer prevention efforts. Greenwald developed educational materials she presented to community groups in Cass County and the surrounding area. The Fargo-based Dakota Medical Foundation is a grant-making organization that invests in projects designed to improve health and health-care access. ### Source:
