January 26, 2006 Agricultural Drainage Workshop Set in Moorhead Excess rain and generally wet conditions contributed to high water tables in some areas and prevented planting in many places last year. Tile drainage is one way to control high water tables. Agricultural tile drainage systems are the topic of an agricultural drainage design and water management workshop Feb. 21-22 at the Moorhead (Minn.) Area Conference Center at the Courtyard by Marriott. The workshop will focus on planning, design, economics, water management and environmental implications. It is intended for farmers, tiling contractors, landowners, industry and agency staff, crop consultants, and land and water resource managers. This annual workshop will feature presentations, problem-solving examples, a panel of farmers who use tile drainage, and lots of discussion time. In addition, drainage contractors and equipment suppliers will be at a drainage exposition. Larry Brown, drainage specialist with the Ohio State University Extension Service, is the featured speaker. On Feb. 21, Extension specialists and experienced practitioners will cover introductory and planning topics in soil water management, including economics, alternative land-use options, water-quality impacts and fundamental tile drainage design concepts. The Feb. 22 session will include several hands-on drainage layout and design problems, and the latest on conservation drainage systems. The University of Minnesota Extension Service is sponsoring the workshop in partnership with the North Dakota State University Extension Service, South Dakota State University Extension Service, Minnesota Land Improvement Contractors Association and industry partners. Feb. 13 is the preregistration deadline.
