January 26, 2006 NDSU Handbook Offers Soil, Fertilizer Information Just selecting the right seed is not enough for today’s farmer. Producers also need to know about the soil and its relationship to plants, and what fertilizers to use. The North Dakota State University Extension Service has a publication to help make the producers’ job a little easier. It’s called the “North Dakota Soil and Fertilizer Handbook.” The 90-page publication includes easy-to-understand descriptions, color photographs, tables, illustrations and a glossary of fertilizer industry and soil science terms. It also contains recommendations on the types and amounts of fertilizer to use on 25 crops. The soil section discusses the various types of soil in North Dakota, the soil’s physical properties, soil’s susceptibility to erosion, the effect of tillage on the soil and how to sample soil. “The meat of the book is to provide help with why you fertilize and how you fertilize, and soil information,” says author Dave Franzen, NDSU Extension soil science specialist. For a copy of the handbook, contact the NDSU Agriculture Communication Distribution Center at (701) 231-7882 or dctr@ndsuext.nodak.edu. The publication costs $10 plus postage. ### Source:
