Specialty Grain Workshops Set

A free workshop to show producers that marketing specialty crops is possible and profitable will be held in three locations in North Dakota later this month.

The workshop, Awareness of Changing Agriculture, will provide grower-oriented information on opportunities and resources available in the identity-preserved specialty grain industry. Producers can learn how the market works and how to access it. They’ll also hear about the specific demands that drive the market.

Workshop times and locations are:

  • Feb. 13, Governor’s Inn, Casselton
  • Feb. 16, North Dakota State University’s North Central Research Extension Center, Minot
  • Feb. 17, NDSU’s Carrington Research Extension Center

All three sessions run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Speakers include Carrol Duerr, general manager of the Minneapolis-based Midwest Shippers’ Association; John Crabtree, assistant director of the Northern Crops Institute in Fargo; Ken Bertsch, North Dakota seed commissioner; Chuck Flemming, marketing coordinator for the North Dakota Department of Agriculture; Jon Anderson, manager of marketing services for the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association; Duane Hauck, director of the NDSU Extension Service; Jay Fisher, director of the North Central Research Extension Center; Mike Hanson, director of the NDSU Extension Service’s northwest district; experts on specialty crop insurance and transportation issues; and specialty grain producers, processors and brokers/traders/merchandisers.

NDSU, the North Dakota Soybean Council, North Dakota Department of Agriculture, North Dakota State Seed Department, and Seattle (Wash.) Transload and Bulk Rail are workshop sponsors.

People planning to attend a workshop should register in advance to ensure they will receive lunch.
