NDSU Equestrian Team Wins Awards

Several members of North Dakota State University’s equestrian team brought home awards from the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s Western competition in Crookston, Minn., on Feb. 11-12.

“I am very proud of the NDSU IHSA team,” says coach Bobbi Bingeman. “They are successful because of their tremendous drive to become better people every day.”

This was the team’s first Western competition of the spring semester.

Winners and their awards from both days of the show were:

  • Abra Grosz, Hazen - first and second in open reining, third in open horsemanship
  • Ashley Flick, Chaseley – first and second in open horsemanship, fifth and sixth in open reining
  • Katie Beaudine, Lake Park, Minn. - two firsts in walk-trot horsemanship
  • Morgan Sager, Starkweather - first in advanced horsemanship
  • Tuula Kallioniemi, Fargo - first and second in intermediate I horsemanship
  • Ashley Campbell, Fargo - first and fifth in novice horsemanship
  • Brandi Anderson, Lidgerwood - second and sixth in walk-trot horsemanship
  • Lynn Brockway, Tracy, Minn. - third and fifth in intermediate II horsemanship
  • Jackie Feil, Ashley - third and fifth in walk-trot horsemanship

  • Ilene Wiste, Watertown, S.D. - fifth in intermediate II horsemanship
  • Maggie Lausten, New York Mills, Minn. - sixth in open reining

Grosz was named the reserve high-point rider the first day. The team was the third-place overall team the first day and reserve champion team the second day.

Flick is in a close competition to become the high-point rider in Zone 9, Region 3, for 2005-06. The high-point award goes to the rider who earns the most points from horsemanship and reining during the regular-season competition.

Zone 9, Region 3, consists of 10 colleges and universities from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

All regional high-point riders are eligible to compete at the IHSA nationals for the American Quarter Horse Association trophy. Regional high-point riders compete in Western horsemanship and reining to become the national high-point Western rider. Each event equals 50 percent of the final score.

NDSU’s Western team competes in Lincoln, Neb., in two weeks, and then moves on to regional championships in April. The hunt team will begin its two-weekend spring schedule in March.
