NDSU Sponsors Spring Horticulture Programs

Late winter is not too early to be thinking "green," “spring" or of planting flowers and vegetables. The North Dakota State University Extension Service is sponsoring several programs to provide an array of information on horticultural subjects, says Ron Smith, NDSU Extension Service horticulturist.

Attendance is open to the public, but in some cases, a nominal fee is charged to cover basic costs, such as meals. Contact the NDSU Extension Service county agent where a program is listed for your community to get more details on the subject matter, cost and time.

Starting with the Bismarck/Mandan Garden Club on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 21, a gardening program will feature a talk on lawn care and square-foot gardening. Ron and Betsey Smith will be the presenters. On Saturday, Feb. 25, there will be a daylong horticulture program at the Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, Minn. Contact Joan Lubitz at (218) 689-1201 for details.

On March 11, Todd Weinmann, Cass County horticulture agent, will host a "Gardening Saturday" at the Cass County Courthouse. Contact Weinmann at (701) 241-5707 for registration information. On Saturday, March 25, it is literally a spring coming-out day with horticulture programs. In Wahpeton, contact Dale Siebert at (701) 642-7793); Minot, contact Mike Rose at (701) 857-6444; and Cooperstown, contact John Swenson at (701) 797-3312.

April also is a busy month for horticulture programs. A “Gardening Saturday” program is scheduled at:

Forman - April 8, contact Jullie Hassebroek at (701) 724-3355
Grand Forks - April 8, contact Steve Sagaser at (701) 780-8229
Bowman - April 15, contact Brenda Rettinger at (701) 523-5271

Evening meetings are scheduled for Maddock on April 17 and Devils Lake on April 18.

For information on the Maddock meeting, contact Scott Knoke at (701) 473-5363. For Devils Lake, contact Bill Hodus at (701) 662-7027.

Smith says there will be a square-foot gardening program in Park Rapids, Minn., but the date is not set.
