NDSU Extension Service to Offer Financial Literacy Education

The North Dakota State University Extension Service is offering a financial literacy course beginning June 12 and ending Aug. 4, according to Debra Pankow, NDSU Extension family economics specialist.

The continuing education course is intended for kindergarten through grade 12 teachers, consumer credit counselors, bankers, Extension agents, 4-H leaders, volunteers and others who are involved with educating young people about personal financial management.

The course is completely online and covers four modules. Online resources and Web sites will be used by students to develop lesson plans for each module.

Instructors for the course are Pankow and Cheryl Thompson, NDSU instructional specialist and technical consultant. The course includes videotaped presentations by representatives from the North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education, North Dakota Bankers Association, North Dakota attorney general’s Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division and North Dakota Securities Commission.

Course objectives include:

  • Participants will learn about research on teen money management behavior, perceptions of money management education, different learning styles and teaching techniques.
  • Participants will become familiar with current money management basics.
  • Participants will become more comfortable and confident teaching money management.
  • Participants will develop and share four lesson plans.

Those wishing to enroll in the program need to have a computer with Internet access. The cost for the 2-credit course is $100. A number of $75 scholarships will be awarded. To request a scholarship application or to register, contact Susan Finneseth at (701) 231-8113 or e-mail Susan.Finneseth@ndsu.edu. The registration deadline is June 1.

The course is made possible by the National Council on Economic Education through funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Innovation and Improvement.
