New Walk North Dakota Challenge Set

The next Walk North Dakota walking challenge starts April 23.

Walk North Dakota is a program the North Dakota State University Extension Service and Northwest North Dakota 5 Plus 5 Coalition sponsor to encourage people to achieve better health by becoming more physically active. It challenges participants to walk 200 miles during the eight-week program, which runs through June 17.

Participants can reach that goal by walking 10,000 steps a day, five days a week. That’s the equivalent of walking five miles a day.

They can join as individuals or groups. The registration fee is $10 per person for participants 18 and older and $5 for those 17 and younger. Registration begins Wednesday, April 12.

All participants need to do is report the number of steps they’ve taken every two weeks. They can make the report online or by postcard.

To register, visit the program’s Web site at www.walknd.com. For more information, call Linda Hauge at (701) 577-4590.

Since Walk North Dakota stated in May 2004, nearly 2,000 people have accepted the challenge. They’ve logged about 683 million steps, or 341,000 miles.
