NDSU Equestrians Excel

Three members of North Dakota State University’s intercollegiate equestrian team placed sixth at the zone championship competition in Terra Haute, Ind., on April 8.

Abra Grosz of Hazen placed in open Western horsemanship. Morgan Sager of Starkweather received her sixth place in advanced Western horsemanship. Kelley Lewis of Barnesville, Minn., took sixth in novice Western horsemanship.

The three did not place well enough to advance to this year’s national championships, but that didn’t bother Bobbi Bingeman, their coach.

“These three have accomplished a lot in both the Western and hunt seat divisions,” Bingeman said. “I am so proud of their advancement of skill and performance this season.”

Grosz, Sager and Lewis qualified for the zone championship at the regional championship show in River Falls, Wis., on April 2.

Several team members placed at the regional event. Western team winners, by category, were:

  • Open rail - Grosz, first; Ashley Flick, fourth
  • Advanced rail - Sager, second
  • Novice rail - Lewis, first
  • Intermediate rail - Beci Hanna, fourth

Hunt seat team winners, by category, were:

  • Novice rail - Lewis, fifth
  • WTC rail - JoAnna Kohlmeyer, fourth

The Western team ended a successful season in Lincoln, Neb., with six riders qualified for the regional championship. They were Flick, Grosz, Sager, Lewis, Ilene Wiste and Hanna.

The hunt seat team qualified three riders - Laura Kenyon, Lewis and Kohlmeyer - for the regional event during competition in Crookston, Minn. Another hunt team rider, Jessica Kirk, left the Crookston event as high-point rider. The team was named the high-point team champion, a first for the team.

Tryouts for the intercollegiate equestrian team’s 2006-07 season will be next fall.
