NDSU Horse Judging Team Places in 1st Competition

North Dakota State University’s horse judging team took 10th place in the halter division in its first contest.

The team competed at the American Paint Horse Association’s 2006 Intercollegiate Horse Judging Spring Sweepstakes in Fort Worth, Texas.

Paige Brummund was the team’s top individual, placing in the top 20 in the halter division. She was one of 91 students competing in that division.

This is NDSU’s first organized horse judging team since the Equine Studies Program began in 2000.

The team competed against 18 teams from other four-year colleges. Team members judged five halter and seven performance classes. The team also was required to present competition judges with oral reasons for its decisions in four of those classes.

“The team did outstandingly for its very first contest,” says Carrie Hammer, one of the team’s coaches and an assistant professor in the Equine Studies Program. “To place in the top 10, over universities with long-established judging programs, is a huge accomplishment for such a young and talented team.”

In addition to Brummund, team members are Lacey Holen, Karin Sorgaard, Lynn Brockway and Stacy Rotenberger. Clare Purdy, NDSU equine science lecturer, is the team’s other coach.
