Western Riding Clinics Scheduled

The North Dakota 4-H Horse Advisory Committee is planning youth Western riding clinics for two Saturdays in June.

The first clinic is in western North Dakota at the Watford City Fairgrounds on June 17. It will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The second clinic is in eastern North Dakota at the Jamestown Rodeo Arena from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24. James River Rodeo Inc. supports this event.

“These clinics are primarily geared toward riders,” says Bobbi Bingeman, advisory committee chairwoman and equine associate in North Dakota State University’s Equine Studies program. “However, this is a tremendous opportunity for competitive horse judgers as well.”

The clinics are open to 4-H members and non-4-H’ers.

Both clinics will consist of three sessions: flying lead changes, the finished pattern, and scoring and rules.

Instructors for the clinic primarily are volunteers. However, they are very qualified and excited to share their knowledge with youth, Bingeman says.

The cost of the clinic is $20 for riders and $5 for auditors.

The North Dakota 4-H Horse Advisory Committee supports Western riding because of the challenging horsemanship objectives this event provides for young, developing riders.
