NDSU Ag Engineer Elected to National Board

Ken Hellevang, a North Dakota State University Extension Service agricultural engineer, has been elected to the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers’ board of trustees.

He is the first North Dakotan chosen to serve on the board. He starts his two-year term during the organization’s international meeting in Portland, Ore., in July.

“Serving on the board of trustees is an honor with great responsibility,” he says. “The society and its members have the expertise to help with many of today’s pressing issues, such as energy, technology in agricultural production and protecting the environment.”

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) is an educational and scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering for agricultural, food and biological systems. The organization, which has its headquarters in St. Joseph, Mich., was founded in 1907. It has 9,000 members in more than 100 countries.

The 14-member board of trustees makes sure the organization fulfills its mission of facilitating the exchange of technical information and promoting the science and art of engineering in the agricultural and biological fields.

Hellevang is a professor in the NDSU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department. He specializes in providing education and technical assistance on subjects such as grain drying, storage and handling; structural engineering; indoor air quality; and energy. He has been at NDSU since 1980.

He is completing a two-year term as chairman of the ASABE Meetings Council. He has been responsible for all of the society’s meetings and conferences, including the annual international meeting, which draws about 1,700 participants from 34 countries.
