Langdon Research Extension Center Field Day Set for July 20

The North Dakota State University Langdon Research Extension Center (LREC) will hold its annual Field Day program from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, July 20. The Langdon Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor coffee and doughnuts beginning at 8 a.m. Traditional research programs with a long history at the LREC will be showcased. They include:

  • NDSU durum breeding project – Elias Elias, professor, NDSU Plant Sciences Department
  • NDSU barley breeding project – Richard Horsley, professor, NDSU Plant Sciences Department
  • NDSU hard red spring wheat breeding project – Mohamed Mergoum, associate professor, NDSU Plant Sciences Department

Tours will address issues affecting producers in the 2006 growing season. Other speakers and topics include:

  • 2006 weed control – Kirk Howatt, associate professor, NDSU Plant Sciences Department
  • 2006 insect control – Janet Knodel, assistant professor, NDSU Entomology Department
  • LREC research programs – John Lukach, agronomist; Bryan Hanson, agronomist; Scott Halley, crop production

The arrival of crops such as soybeans and corn in this region also will be addressed. Due to recent bad storms, the North Dakota Forest Service will have a session on shelterbelt renovation and management planning. The lending institutions in Cavalier County will sponsor a free lunch immediately following the tour.
