Central Grasslands Research Extension Center to Gain Office, Conference Space

North Dakota State University’s Central Grasslands Research Extension Center will be expanding its capabilities with an addition to its office building later this year.

The almost 3,000-square-foot addition will nearly double the size of the building, according to Paul Nyren, center director.

The two-story addition will include a conference room large enough for 60 people on the main floor and five offices and a lab room on the second floor.

“It will allow us to better utilize our interactive video conferencing and have larger meetings in the facilities at the center,” Nyren says.

The current conference room can hold only about a dozen people, so center staff have to hold larger meetings elsewhere, such as in nearby Streeter.

“The new lab will make it possible for Central Grasslands scientists, in collaboration with colleagues at Fargo and other centers, to conduct studies never before possible,” says D.C. Coston, NDSU vice president for Agriculture and University Extension.

The public got its first look at the planned addition last month when the architects’ rendering of it was unveiled during the center’s 25th anniversary celebration and annual field day events.

The 2005 North Dakota Legislature approved the expenditure of $350,000 for the addition. The Legislature specified $270,000 would come from the sale of bonds and the remaining $80,000 would have to be raised locally.

Center officials plan to solicit bids from contractors later this month. Nyren hopes construction can start in August or early September. The completion date is set for Jan. 1, 2007.

EAPC Architects Engineers of Bismarck designed the addition.

Central Grasslands is one of eight NDSU Research Extension Centers located strategically throughout the state to develop agricultural techniques and technology for North Dakota, the U.S. and the rest of the world.
