July 13, 2006 Schauer Appointed NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center Director Chris Schauer has been appointed North Dakota State University Hettinger Research Extension Center director, according to Ken Grafton, North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station director and NDSU College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources dean. Schauer replaces Tim Faller, who retired as director in February. “Chris has been exposed to a variety of management styles and will utilize the best of these styles as center director,” Grafton says. “His energy, drive, enthusiasm and excellent work ethic are a few of his traits that will allow the Hettinger REC to continue its mission of effectively serving southwestern North Dakota farmers and ranchers well into the 21st century.” Schauer has been doing post-doctoral research at the Hettinger REC since 2003. He was the principal investigator for research evaluating supra-supplementation of selenium to finishing lambs, alternative forages for beef cattle backgrounding rations, alternative supplementation strategies for grazing cows and alternative uses of Conservation Reserve Program lands. In addition, Schauer is responsible for research evaluating the selenium status of grazing bison, alternative lamb finishing rations, dormant-season grazing on western rangeland and multispecies grazing on leafy spurge-infested rangelands. “Two of his strongest attributes are the amount of research he has had published and his record of competing for grant funding,” Grafton says. Schauer completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees at NDSU and his doctorate degree in animal science at Oregon State University. Schauer says he and his wife, Ronda, a Center, N.D., native, look forward to raising their family in Hettinger. “I plan on continuing to serve the sheep, cattle and agronomy industries with progressive research and outreach programs, while also addressing some of the new land management concerns of private and federal land managers,” Schauer says. ### Source: Chris
