July 20, 2006 Composting Field Day and Tour Set The Wells County Soil Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service and North Dakota State University Extension Service will be hosting a field day and tour of on-farm composting sites Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. Three farms have been cooperating with the Wells County SCD to participate in a beef feedlot manure composting project. The tour will allow participants the opportunity to see how composting can be done on farms, what type of equipment is needed and how to properly manage compost piles or windrows. Participants can meet at the Wells County SCD office, 202 Vine Ave., Fessenden, at 1 p.m. to board a bus that will tour the three sites. Others may wish to meet directly at the host farms.
Anne Ehni of the Wells County SCD office has been managing the composting process at each site and will share with participants how the process has been going, as well as pile temperatures, volume reduction, equipment requirements and time involved. Ron Wiederholt, NDSU Extension Service waste management specialist, will outline proper siting of composting windrows, utilization of the compost and the benefits/drawbacks of composting. This project is the result of Wells County SCD receiving an NRCS conservation initiative grant to introduce Wells County livestock producers to composting. “Composting of livestock manure may not fit everyone’s management system, but there is a significant opportunity for beef producers to benefit from adopting composting on their farms,” Wiederholt says. A map of the tour route is available by contacting the Wells County SCD/NRCS office at (701) 547-3622, ext. 5. ### Source: Ron
