NDSU Sets Drought Meetings

Producers who have drought-related questions will be able to get answers at several meetings in drought areas.

“This is a chance for producers to ask questions of North Dakota State University Extension Service experts on topics ranging from cattle forage issues to the economics of farming during a drought,” says Greg Lardy, NDSU Extension Service beef cattle specialist and professor in the Animal and Range Sciences Department.

The dates, times and locations for the meetings are: (all are in Central time unless otherwise noted)

  • July 31, 7 p.m. (Mountain time) – Hettinger Research Extension Center, Hettinger
  • Aug. 1, 9 a.m. (Mountain time) – Grant County Fair Building, Carson

Topics to be discussed are:

  • Range/forage issues

  • Livestock management (nitrates, water quality and early weaning)
  • Nutrition issues (byproducts, limit feeding grain to cows)
  • Farm Service Agency rules and regulations (CRP rules)

All the speakers will participate in a question-and-answer session at the end of each meeting. Resource material on how to handle stress during a drought also will be available.

Producers also can access NDSU drought information on the Web at www.ag.ndsu.edu/drought/. Producers who wish to purchase forage or have forage for sale can access NDSU’s FeedList at www.ag.ndsu.edu/feedlist/. Producers who have grazing land available or can custom feed cattle for the winter also are asked to enter their information on the FeedList.
