List Cow Wintering and Feeding on NDSU FeedList

Feedlot operators who are willing to winter cattle for farmers and ranchers from drought- stricken areas of the region now have a way to find each other. The North Dakota State University FeedList has an option for feedlots wishing to list feeding and wintering services and ranchers also can list how many cows they need to have wintered.

Drought conditions in the region have many livestock producers in need of feedlots to winter beef cows. Feedlots that are willing to provide this service can list it on the NDSU database designed to help feeders and ranchers connect.

FeedList is accessible on the Web at www.ag.ndsu.edu/feedlist/. The FeedList is an easy-to-use database showing what each feedlot has to offer for services and its contact information. Prospective buyers can check the Web site and select feedlots they wish to contact to make a deal. There is no charge to the buyer or seller for using the FeedList.

To make an entry on the FeedList, feedlots and ranchers can contact a county office of the NDSU Extension Service or submit entries to the list through an online form. Once the feedlot is full or the services no longer offered, contact your county Extension Service office to have the entry removed. North Dakota residents without Internet access can view the FeedList at any county Extension office.

The FeedList has been available during feed shortages since the late 1970s.

"Because of the high cost of diesel fuel, transporting large quantities of forage may not be economically practical this year," says Greg Lardy, NDSU Extension Service beef cattle specialist. "Instead, many ranchers are exploring the idea of having someone else custom feed or winter their cow herd. This service will help match those in need of these types of services with those willing and able to provide it."

Surrounding states have similar services and are linked to the NDSU Extension's Coping with Droughts Web page at www.ag.ndsu.edu/drought/.
