August 24, 2006 Revenues Near $121 Million for N.D. Minority-owned Firms The number of North Dakota firms owned by American Indians and Alaska natives totaled 852 in 2002, with revenue of $120.6 million, according to the Survey of Business Owners: American Indian- and Alaska Native-owned Firms: 2002, which is published by the U.S. Census Bureau. This month’s “Economic Briefs,” a monthly publication from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University, focuses on the number of firms owned by American Indians and Alaska natives in North Dakota. The Survey of Business Owners: American Indian- and Alaska Native-owned Firms: 2002 focuses on nonfarm business organizations (companies with one or more establishments). It defines American Indian- and Alaska native-owned firms as companies in which American Indians and Alaska natives own 51 percent or more of the interest or stock of the business. It excludes businesses owned by American Indian tribal entities because they are considered to be government-owned entities. American Indians and Alaska natives, North Dakota’s largest minority group, represented 5.1 percent of the population and owned 1.5 percent of all firms in the state in 2002. Nationally, 0.9 percent of firms were owned by American Indians and Alaska natives. In North Dakota, 29.3 percent of all firms had employees. Among firms owned by American Indians and Alaska natives, 10.7 percent had employees (employing 673 people). “While Native American firms tend to employ fewer people relative to other firms in the state, their contributions to North Dakota’s economy are unmistakable,” says Richard Rathge, State Data Center director. The largest industry, in terms of the number of firms owned by American Indians and Alaska natives, was health care and social assistance in 2002 (301 firms with $2.9 million in revenue). However, the largest industry in terms of revenue generated by firms owned by American Indians and Alaska natives was wholesale trade (Nine firms with $52 million in revenue). The construction industry was the second largest industry in terms of the number of firms and revenue (125 firms with $25.7 million in revenue). In addition, the 48 retail trade firms owned by American Indians and Alaska natives generated another $15.7 million in revenue. ### Source: Richard
