Winners of 1st ‘Eat Smart. Play Hard.’ Poster, Essay Contests Announced

North Dakota children and teens tested their thinking and writing skills, and creativity, in the first North Dakota “Eat Smart. Play Hard.” poster and essay contests.

The North Dakota State University Extension Service, Center for 4-H Youth Development and Bison Athletics sponsored the contests.

“Eat Smart. Play Hard.” is a statewide campaign that focuses on helping children develop healthy eating habits and be physically active. It’s based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s initiative of the same name.

"Childhood obesity remains a concern throughout the United States,” says Julie Garden-Robinson, NDSU Extension’s food and nutrition specialist. “The entrants in the poster and essay contests had creative, positive health messages for their peers that could make a difference."

Torrin Poss of Hettinger took first place in the beginner division (ages 8 to 10) of both the poster and essay contests.

The other winners were:

  • Tabitha Joy Schumacher, Venturia, first, teen division, poster contest
  • Whitney Rath-Wald, Napoleon, first, teen division, essay contest
  • Bethany Brumbaugh, Cavalier, second, beginner division, poster contest
  • Tanya Krumm, Oakes, second, teen division, poster contest
  • Haley Fingarson, Edinburg, third, beginner division, poster contest

Contestants were required to produce posters that educate North Dakota youth and adults about the importance of making healthy food choices, getting regular exercise and families eating together. The topic of the essay contest was “What does ‘Eat Smart. Play Hard.’ mean to you?”

The winners received a $100 savings bond for first place, $50 savings bond for second place and $25 savings bond for third place. A grant from the National 4-H Council, in partnership with Cargill Inc., funded this project.

Another “Eat Smart. Play Hard.” poster contest will be held this fall. The contest is open to youth ages 8 to 19 as of Sept. 1. The entry deadline is Oct. 30. For more information, contact Carrie Stark, contest coordinator, at (701) 231-5923 or cstark@ndsuext.nodak.edu, or Garden-Robinson at (701) 231-7187 or jgardenr@ndsuext.nodak.edu.

“With the quality of the posters submitted during the spring contest, we decided to hold another contest this fall,” says Stark, 4-H youth development specialist. “We are hoping to triple the number of posters submitted. The posters will be used throughout the state to promote the ‘Eat Smart. Play Hard.’ campaign.”
