NDSU Beef Feedlot Research Review, Ethanol Coproduct Seminar Set for Oct. 10

The North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center will host the NDSU Beef Feedlot Research Review and Ethanol Coproducts Seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Developments in beef feedlot production and research will be highlighted during the morning. Topics and speakers include:

  • An update on North Dakota Natural Beef LLC, the beef processing and marketing operation the NDSU Beef Systems Center for Excellence helped start, and possible demand for “natural”-raised calves - Ken Odde, NDSU Department of Animal and Range Sciences
  • Feeding cattle naturally - Vern Anderson, animal scientist at the Carrington Research Extension Center
  • Light test-weight grains and their feedlot performance - Marc Bauer, NDSU Department of Animal and Range Sciences
  • Feeding field peas make better beef - Anderson

An afternoon seminar will feature ethanol coproducts, the cattle feed byproduct produced from ethanol fermentation. Leading off the seminar will be an update on the progress of Spirit Ethanol, a proposed 100 million-gallon ethanol plant at Spiritwood, N.D. Other speakers are:

  • Greg Lardy, NDSU Department of Animal and Range Sciences, on using ethanol coproducts in forage-based diets
  • Erik Loe, South Dakota State University Department of Animal and Range Sciences, on feeding corn and distillers grains to feedlot cattle
  • Anderson, on feeding barley and distillers grains to feedlot cattle

"The Feedlot Research Review is an excellent opportunity for feedlot operators to discuss current beef cattle issues and management concerns with researchers and Extension Service staff in a group setting or one-on-one," says Karl Hoppe, Extension livestock specialist at the Carrington Research Extension Center.

The registration fee is $10 per person and includes a beef dinner.

For more information, contact the Carrington REC at (701) 652-2951 or check its Web site at www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/carringt/. The center is 3.5 miles north of Carrington on U.S. Highway 281.
