September 12, 2006 NDSU Extension Service to Offer Horizons Workshops Throughout N.D. The North Dakota State University Extension Service will hold six one-day showcases throughout the state to give people an opportunity to learn about the Horizons program, which is aimed at communities with fewer than 5,000 residents. The showcases, “Strengthening the Heart of Small Communities,” are free of charge. They will spotlight leadership and poverty reduction strategies. They’ll include workshops and discussions, and provide information participants can take back to their communities. Participants also will have an opportunity to learn details about applying for the Horizons program, which will kick off in October. Showcase organizers hope to have many small communities participate in this practical learning opportunity and hear information on leadership, poverty reduction and community building. Various workshops will be presented throughout the day. Titles of the workshops include “Making Wise Group Decisions,” “Moving People to Action,” “Taking a Leadership Inventory,” “Identifying Community Assets,” “Tackling Community Controversy” and “Living in a Thriving Community.” Specialists from the NDSU Extension Service will teach the workshops. All participants will receive a workbook filled with tools from each session. To participate in the Horizons program, communities must have at least five residents attend a showcase. Residents also must work with the NDSU Extension Service to organize study circles and a LeadershipPlenty program in their communities. “Plan to attend a workshop in your area to learn valuable information,” says Lynette Flage, NDSU Extension’s Horizons program coordinator. “This will be a great opportunity for you and other community members to not only gain valuable information on how to deal with tough issues in your community, but it also will be a time to learn about the upcoming Horizons program.” Food will be provided during the workshop at no cost. The showcase times and places are:
