NDSU Celebrates 33 Years of Excellence in Agriculture and Bison Athletics

The 33rd annual Harvest Bowl program at North Dakota State University will be held Nov. 10-11. Highlights of the event include a Harvest Bowl dinner and awards on Nov. 10, and the Harvest Bowl football game between NDSU and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, on Nov. 11.

“NDSU is dedicated to recognizing agriculture, education and great people in the region by hosting a banquet and dedicating a football game each fall to the Harvest Bowl theme,” according to Eddie Bernhardson, NDSU Harvest Bowl chair.

As the state’s land-grant university, NDSU plays a major role in contributing knowledge through research, academic programs and the Extension Service. More than 1,800 agriculturists have been recognized and more than $76,000 in scholarship dollars have been awarded to NDSU student athletes with agricultural backgrounds.

The NDSU Harvest Bowl program recognizes the success, dedication and hard work of outstanding agriculturists in 53 counties in North Dakota and five counties in Minnesota.

An agri-business award recipient is chosen annually. This award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of agriculture and business in North Dakota and beyond. John Bollingberg, Bremen, N.D., will receive the 2006 award.

For more than 50 years, Bollingberg has been working energetically to promote agriculture and agricultural research.

Six scholarships also are awarded to outstanding male and female athletes. The 2006 Harvest Bowl scholarship recipient is Inger Hodgson, 5-foot-9-inch freshman guard for the women’s basketball team. Hodgson is from Barneveld, Wis. The recipient of a Harvest Bowl scholarship in memory of Robert Johansen is Justin Frick, 6-foot-3-inch senior defensive tackle from Yankton, S.D.

The Bob and Darlene Yaggie football scholarship is awarded to Ryan Foster, 6-foot-2-inch sophomore offensive lineman from Eleva, Wis. Receiving the Bob Lauf Memorial Scholarship is Katie Dahlen, 5-foot-10-inch senior guard on the women’s basketball team. Dahlen is from Fargo. The Ron Offutt scholarship goes to Gerald Ebel, 6-foot-6-inch sophomore offensive lineman from Yankton. Jacob Bryce, sophomore wrestler from Glennwood, Minn., is the recipient of the Titan Machinery scholarship.

The 33rd annual Harvest Bowl festivities begin Friday, Nov. 10, at the Fargo Holiday Inn with a dinner, awards ceremony and games. On Saturday, honorees will participate in educational sessions on the NDSU campus and attend the Harvest Bowl football game.
