NDSU Sponsors Greenhouse Informational Meeting

The seventh annual informational meeting for professional and hobby greenhouse operators will be held on Nov. 3 at the North Dakota State University North Central Research Extension Center in Minot. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Although the meeting is designed for greenhouse and nursery operators, all gardeners are invited, and the information provided should be of interest to most garden enthusiasts, says Ron Smith, NDSU Extension Service horticulturist.

The keynote speaker is Kerstin Ouellet, Pen and Petal president. Pen and Petal is an advertising, marketing and public relations agency in Falbrook, Cali. Ouellet received her master’s degree in Munich, Germany. She worked at nurseries in Germany and Denmark prior to moving to California. She is a well-known speaker in the greenhouse industry and has written books on container gardens for professional and home gardeners. She will present a program on container garden designs for today and tomorrow and do-it-yourself and don't-do-it-yourself greenhouse industry marketing.

Additional presentations at the meeting include a review of the weights and measures issues, and a discussion on generic pesticides by Rob Gensch, J.R. Johnson Supply Co.

Neal Holland, a well-known horticulturist in North Dakota and owner of Sheyenne Gardens in Fargo, will give a presentation on ornamental grasses. Russell Emerson, Ball Seed Co., will have a slide presentation on new bedding plant introductions. A presentation on diagnosing tree and shrub problems by Mike Rose, Ward County Extension cropping specialist, will conclude the meeting.

Preregistration is required by Oct. 31. To register, call the Ward County Extension office at (701) 857-6444. The $20 registration fee is payable at the door and includes a noon meal. The meeting is sponsored by the NDSU Extension Service, North Dakota Nursery and Greenhouse Association, Tessman Co. and J.R. Johnson Supply Co. Debbie Weisz, Weisz Country Greenhouse in Tioga, helped organize the regional event.
