October 12, 2006 NDSU Awarded 2nd Grant for Colorectal Cancer Program North Dakota State University has received a second grant from the Dakota Medical Foundation toward a colorectal cancer prevention and screening program. The NDSU Extension Service and departments of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, and Nursing teamed up to develop educational materials on colorectal cancer prevention and screening. NDSU will use the latest grant of $2,500 to provide incentives for county Extension agents and public health nurses to teach the program throughout eastern North Dakota, according to NDSU Extension nutrition and health specialist Jane Edwards. She helped develop the program. The educational materials were developed for use in worksites as part of companies’ wellness initiatives, but the lesson could be taught to any interested audience, she says. The program has two objectives: improve people’s lifestyle behaviors to prevent them from developing colorectal cancer, and encourage people to get screening tests for early detection and treatment of the disease. Edwards says programs such as this are vital because colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in North Dakota. It also is 90 percent preventable and more than 90 percent treatable if detected early. The Fargo-based Dakota Medical Foundation’s original grant to NDSU was for $5,390. The foundation is a grant-making organization that invests in projects to improve health and health-care access. ### Source: Jane
