Racial Diversity in North Dakota on the Rise

Though racial minorities in North Dakota continue to represent a relatively small proportion of the state’s total population (less than one in 10), their numbers are rising.

This month’s “Population Bulletin,” a monthly publication from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University, presents the July 1, 2005, population estimates by race as released from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Branch.

These estimates reveal a continuing increase in population diversity throughout North Dakota. North Dakota’s racial minority population (people reporting their race as black, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander or multiple races) totaled 49,173, which is 7.7 percent of the state’s total population of 636,677. While the racial minority population in North Dakota grew 8.1 percent (3,691 people) from 2000 through 2005, the Caucasian population (which comprises the vast majority of people in the state) declined 1.5 percent (9,214 people).

“In part, the increasing diversity of our state’s population is contributing to our state’s recent population growth,” says Richard Rathge, State Data Center director. “This trend is likely to continue.”

The American Indian/Alaska Native population, North Dakota’s largest racial minority, grew by 2,314 people (7.4 percent) from 2000 through 2005. During the same period, the black population grew by 726 (17.5 percent) and the Asian/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander population grew by 512 (13.1 percent). People reporting multiple races in North Dakota grew by 139 people (2.3 percent).

The Hispanic population (an ethnic category reported separately from race) represents 1.6 percent of the state’s total population and grew by 2,393 (30.7 percent). Nationally, the Hispanic population grew by 20.9 percent.
