Lamb, Wool Producers Convention Set

This year’s North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association convention will be Dec. 1-2 at the Best Western Seven Seas Inn and Conference Center in Mandan.

The association and North Dakota State University Extension Service organize the event.

“This joint Extension/NDLWPA event gives sheep producers throughout the state an opportunity to hear from some of the top industry scientists, marketing specialists and leaders in the Midwest,” says Justin Luther, NDSU Extension sheep specialist. “Producers also will have the opportunity to become more involved in the NDLWPA, the organization that represents their voice at the state and national level.”

Preregistration is not required. Registration is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, and 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. Friday night’s speakers and their topics are:

  • U.S. Department of Agriculture biosecurity, disease surveillance and food safety grant - Sheri Veil, Oklahoma State University
  • Controlling coyote predation - Phil Mastrangelo and John Paulson, North Dakota Wildlife Services
  • Scotland’s sheep industry - Luther
  • Future of the NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center - Christopher Schauer, director

Other events include the association’s fundraising auction. Participants also will be served lamb bratwurst and snacks.

Saturday’s speakers and topics are:

  • Byproduct utilization in the sheep operation - Schauer
  • Integrating sheep grazing into farming systems - Hayes Goosey, Montana State University
  • Methods for integrating fall lambing - Luther
  • Top 10 sheep health issues at the Steele Veterinary Clinic - Cory Tebay, veterinarian
  • American Lamb Board update - David Trotter, board member
  • Equity Cooperative Livestock - David Johnson, marketing vice president
  • USDA biosecurity, disease surveillance and food safety grant – Veil
  • American Sheep Industry Association – Burdell Johnson, president-elect

Other events include a grilled lamb sirloin dinner at 11:30 a.m. and the association’s annual meeting at 3:15 p.m.

The cost of the convention is $50 for couples and $35 for individuals, which can be paid at the door. Just the lamb dinner is $15. Rooms are $55 plus tax. Contact the Seven Seas at (701) 663-7401 to reserve lodging.
