November 16, 2006 N.D. Dairy and Pork Groups Hold Joint Convention The second annual North Dakota Dairy and Pork Producers Convention will be Nov. 28-29 at the Ramada Plaza Suites in Fargo. The event, co-sponsored by the Milk Producers Association of North Dakota and North Dakota Pork Council, is a collaborative effort with the North Dakota State University Extension Service to provide timely and important information to producers and others in the pork and dairy industries, according to Extension dairy specialist J.W. Schroeder. “Strength in numbers is key to the future of livestock development,” says Schroeder. “This is only the second time that these two livestock commodity groups have combined resources to provide this educational event. We have a nice variety of offerings in education, exhibitors and fellowship.” Speakers will include Rita Ussatis, a Cass County Extension agent; pork experts Hans Stein of the University of Illinois and Mike Brumm of Brumm Swine Consultancy; and dairy experts Les Hansen of the University of Minnesota, Alvaro Garcia of South Dakota State University and Hilltop Dairy, Donna Moenning of the Midwest Dairy Association and dairy farmer Bennett Osmonson. State Sen. Joel Heitkamp and Rep. Wesley Belter will provide a legislative update on livestock development. Kristin Brekke of the American Coalition for Ethanol will discuss what the growing ethanol industry means to dairy producers. John Dhuyvetter, NDSU Extension area livestock specialist, will conduct the Youth Hog College at NDSU on Tuesday, Nov. 28, in conjunction with the convention. The Youth Hog College is open to North Dakotans and Minnesotans ages 14 to 21 who want more information on swine production and the hog industry as they develop their career plans. Trent Loos will be the convention’s keynote luncheon speaker Tuesday. He is a sixth-generation farmer who operates a ranch with his family in Nebraska and has several radio programs, including “Dakota Trails and Tales.” Other events during the convention include tours of NDSU’s Animal Nutrition and Physiology Center and Dairy Research and Teaching Center, a trade show, awards banquet, joint pork and dairy scholarships auction, and the North Dakota Pork Council and Milk Producers Association of North Dakota’s annual producer meetings. The cost of the convention is $10 plus meals. Meal costs are: lunch Tuesday, $15; Tuesday banquet, $22; breakfast Wednesday, Nov, 29, $11; Wednesday lunch, $10. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday. The convention is open to all dairy and pork producers, and allied industry representatives, including those from Minnesota, South Dakota and Canada. Membership in a producer group is not required.
