North Dakota Moves to 9th Largest Oil Producer in the Nation

North Dakota ranks ninth in crude oil production out of 31 oil-producing states and two federal offshore areas. North Dakota produced an average of 98,000 barrels of oil per day in 2005 (up from 10th in 2004).

This month’s “Economic Briefs,” a monthly publication from the North Dakota State Data Center at North Dakota State University, focuses on crude oil production. North Dakota’s total oil production in 2005, approximately 36 million barrels, was 1.9 percent of the nation’s total production. Texas, Alaska and California, the top three states in U.S. crude oil production, captured nearly half of total oil production in the nation (49.4 percent, or nearly 1 billion barrels).

Nationally, 1.9 billion barrels of oil were produced in 2005, a 4.7 percent decline from 2004. On average, production nationwide has declined 2.7 percent per year since 1985.

North Dakota’s oil production increased sharply in the late 1970s and peaked in 1984 at nearly 53 million barrels. Production declined throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. After a small rise in the mid-1990s, production slowed again, dropping to 29 million barrels by 2003. In 2004, production increased 5.9 percent to 31 million barrels. In 2005, production statewide increased another 14.5 percent to 36 million barrels.

“These sizeable increases in production have translated into equally sizeable increases in state revenues,” says Richard Rathge, State Data Center director. “The per capita income for North Dakota jumped 7.6 percent between 2004 and 2005, nearly doubling the national average increase of 4.2 percent.”

Bowman County was North Dakota’s largest crude oil producer in 2005 (13 million barrels), followed by McKenzie (5.4 million barrels), Billings (4.7 million barrels), Williams (3.4 million barrels), Stark (2.4 million barrels) and Bottineau (2.3 million barrels).
