December 14, 2006 Collect Grain Samples for Wheat Show North Dakota grain producers can see how their 2006 wheat and durum crops stack up against other growers’ grain at the 2007 National Hard Spring Wheat Show on Feb. 5-7 in Williston. Producers can enter a sample in three classes – commercial, professional and youth. They can enter as many samples as they wish as long as they submit different varieties of spring wheat or durum. To enter the commercial class, producers need to provide 10 pounds (roughly 6 to 8 quarts) of 2006 spring wheat or durum. Samples can come straight off the combine or be collected from the bin. Handpicking is not allowed. Show management will clean the samples. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top entries in each subclass, depending on the number of samples entered. In addition, the top 10 commercial spring wheat samples will be judged for bread-making quality. Cash prizes of $150, $100 and $50, and trophies, will be awarded to the top three places. The North Dakota Wheat Commission is sponsoring this competition. The professional class requires a 1-quart sample of handpicked spring wheat or durum. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 10 entries for spring wheat and top five for durum. Producers entering the commercial or professional class also are eligible to win 25 bushels of foundation seed provided by North Dakota State University’s Williston Research Extension Center. The seed will be spring wheat or durum and have a value of about $300. The youth class is open to all youth under age 18. Entrants need to provide a 1-quart sample of handpicked spring wheat or durum. Samples that are not handpicked will be discarded. Cash prizes will be awarded to all individual samples that aren’t discarded. Each youth club whose members exhibit a minimum of 15 handpicked samples representing at least five different varieties will be awarded $100. All blue ribbon entries will advance to the professional class. Producers also can enter samples from other 2006 crops, such as winter wheat, oats, safflowers and flax. They need to submit a 10-pound sample from the combine or bin. Handpicked samples are not allowed. These other crops will be judged as a class and the top three winners will receive ribbons. Samples must be submitted by Jan. 10. Bags to hold samples are available at the NDSU Extension Service’s county offices or Williston REC. Each sample should be labeled with the exhibitor’s name and address, and the crop variety. Producers can drop off their samples at their local Extension office or Williston REC.
